This is a real winner. Honestly, there's no reason this isn't as popular as the Manhattan or the Old Fashioned. It must be the name -- nobody wants to order something that's just "all right." But the All Right cocktail belies its name.
I like Manhattans and Martinis quite a bit, they are my after-work go to drink of choice when I want a cocktail after work. But I'm at best lukewarm on vermouth. I'm generally of the very-very-dry martini school, and I'm leaning that way with my Manhattans. The All Right is a lot like that, but blessedly without any vermouth at all.
It's a perfect blend of orange curaçao and rye whiskey with a drop of Angostura bitters.
Drinking this, the citrus tang from the orange and the sour from the rye blend surprisingly well, and the sweet-bitter balance from the curaçao and the bitters sets that balance off nicely.
ALL RIGHT COCKTAIL
Use a large Mixing glass filled with Lump Ice.
1 jigger Rye Whiskey.
2/3 jigger Orange Curacoa.
1 dash Angostura Bitters.
Shake well; strain into Cocktail glass and serve.
This was the first drink we tried out with our homemade curaçao, and we both liked it so much that -- what's that you say? Oh, yeah, we made some curaçao. No big deal. Bullock gives a recipe...but that's for our next post.
Here's our redaction of the Bullock recipe:
All Right
1 1/2 oz Rye
1 oz. Orange Curacao
1 dash bitters
Fill a shaker half full of ice, add ingredients. Shake well, strain into cocktail glass.
Or, if you prefer, stir together ingredients in a mixing glass and serve on the rocks; we liked it both ways. In either case, it's recommended to preface this drink by giving a cheesy wink and exclaiming, "Allll riiight!"
